Benefits of a blogger: Great Australian Online Friends

One thing good about being a blogger is you get to make some good online friends, including 3 from Australia, including one with whom we are in constant communication. In fact, he contributed his candlelight vigil to Candlelight Vigil for Cancer Victims.

However, communicating via the Internet is nothing like face-to-face meeting, and one day, I hope to have exactly that. He lives in Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Now Queensland have a climate not very much different form ours, and I think if I ever go there, I would be quite comfortable. Comfortable? Well, not in the sense of squatting in his house. That would be a little bit too much to expect. In any case, there are plenty of other interesting places in Queensland and neighboring New South Wales that would be worth visiting, among which are:

Burleigh Heads, Queensland

Burleigh Heads in the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, is a suburb. Burleigh Heads located along the Gold Coast Highway, 7 kilometre south of Surfers Paradise and 17 kilometer north of the border between Queensland and New South Wales. Like any Gold Coast community, you cannot escape from beautiful beaches, and for Burleigh Heads, there is the Burleigh Beach which is a well protected and you can get one of the best swimming, body boarding and surfing there.

The climate of Queensland is tropical and sub-tropical, not much different from ours. So it should be no surprise to find many nature parks like the David Fleay Wildlife Park which houses many native animals living in conditions as similar as possible to their natural habitats. Then there is the Mount Cougal Springbrook National Park with refreshing waterfalls and lush rainforest, the David Fleay Wildlife Park where you can see unusual native animals and the Burleigh Head National Park 81 km southeast of Brisbane. Plenty to attract the interest of Enviroman, my online nickname.

Those nature reserve parks may add an extra incentive to pop over to Burleigh Heads, Queensland and after bad experiences of hunting for suitable accommodation on arrival, you should have no doubt that I would rely on online accommodation booking sites like Burleigh Heads Hotels, especially as I have 24-hour broadband access to the Internet.

I understand that the above website have been revamped and a directory section has been added which makes it far easier to drill down and search for heavily discounted last minute accommodation in Australia. I checked and found last minute accommodation search. Perhaps this is what they were referring to.

I recently revisited the site after a long time of absense, and do not know if my memory is failing me, but the website seemed to have changed, if not in form and substance, but at least in appearance like color. However, memory after long lapse of time can be undependable. Anyway, this referece to being able to easily drill down and search for heavily discounted last minute accommodation in Australia perhaps could be referring to "Refined search" where you select your country, region or city, then specify check-in and check-out time, number of nights and number of rooms, number of guests, minimum star rating, and this part seemed most interesting, a slider to indicate your preferred budget. Hopefully a reader will try them out and provide feedback on their experience.

Manly, Brisbane, Australia

Manly is a suburb of Brisbane, capital city of Queensland. It is located about 16 kilometer east of Brisbane. 16 kilometer is only a half-hour drive, and the children of my good online friend in Sunshine Coast lives in Brisbane. But there is sufficient interesting stuff in Manly to keep me there. I might try my hands at boating as Manly is a popular area for boating. They have many boating clubs and its waters are well sheltered. Then there is Oceanworld Manly which houses dangerous Australian marine life like sharks, giant stingrays, turtles, plus reptiles like deadly snakes, crocodiles and other reptiles, and of course the Australian spiders. I might even try my "hands" at diving with the great fearsome sharks.

Accommodation, if I ever go, again will be via online accommodation booking websites like Manly Hotels

Coolangatta, Queensland

While the title says Coolangatta is in Queensland, it is actually a border town between Queensland and New South Wales. While I have another Australian online friend who retired to Thailand, our northern neighbor, I understand Coolangatta is popular with other Australian retiree, especially with its laid-back lifestyle. The town derives its income mainly from tourism and partly from other economic activities like fishing, seafood restaurants and holiday clubs. Ancients like us may get attracted to Coolangatta by the two-week Wintersun Festival normally held in June. The Wintersun Festival is a festival which try to recreate the atmosphere of the 1950s and 1960s with free entertainment and other attractions. Good enough to tempt me there which mean if and when the time comes, I may have to surf over to Coolangatta Hotels as the site claims to be able to offer last minute heavily discounted rates for accommodation booked through them. For a pensioner, that is important.

Byron Bay, New South Wales

Now Byron Bay is a town in New South Wales, but it is nearer to the capital city of Queensland and the capital city of New South Wales. It is only 140 kilometre south of Brisbane compared with about 600 kilometre north of Sydney. I have never seen a whale in my 59 years of life on earth, but if I get a chance to go to Byron Bay, that will be my chance of a lifetime, to see a real life water spouting whale rather than on on the television screen. Byron Bay have many good beaches popular with surfers. The more adventurous ones may go for sky diving while nature lovers will go whale and wildlife watching. I hope my daughters don't tag along because apart for snorkeling, Byron Bay waters also makes it an ideal place for scuba diving, which I do not encourage.

No need to ask me about where to go for accommodation, for by now you would now it will be nothing less than an online accommodation website like Byron Bay Hotels which I can do from the one device I am practically glued to the whole day long - my computer.

Malaysian Colosseum: Malaysia's oldest cinema cum restaurant

Most people will know that Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the center of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire and used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as public executions. I understand some unfortunate few had to face the lions minus weapons in the Colosseum in the bad old days. However, now it is but a badly damaged remnant of its "glorious" past.

Malaysian ColosseumFortunately, our "Malaysian Colosseum" is still proudly standing and being maintained in good conditions. It is Malaysia's oldest cinema cum restaurant or Cafe cum hotel, built in 1921 by Chua Cheng Bok and still owned by his scions. The Colosseum cinema features mostly Indian movies and is still operating. There was a proposal by the Malaysian government proposed to close the theater and turn it into a cultural center, this caused a huge public outcry and the scheme was abandoned. Good thing.

Our "Malaysian Colosseum" (actually spelt Coliseum) is located at 98-100 Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur. A meal at the Colosseum restaurant will set you back between RM9 to RM34 (USD 2.35 to 8.95). This is the place to get real Western food like enormous sizzling steaks. The food is pretty good and the prices are reasonable. So despite its worn, ancient appearance, it is pretty popular and it is advisable to make reservation for a meal there without hassle.

Malaysian family in Italy

Me and my family in Italy

I, my late wife and my eldest daughter, then only a year plus old, traveled from Belgium to Italy by train via Switzerland in the 70s. Switzerland is my favorite country in Europe and Italy is second on the list. What did I like about Italy? The Italian food of course.

Italian food and Malaysian food: Similarities and differences

calzone Italian foodPhoto of Big Calzone is property of Beatrice Murch

Look at that Big Calzone!!! Shy to put our Malaysian tiny curry puff beside it for comparison. There are other similarities as well. There is the spaghetti which is similar to our noodles (Hokkien mee, Magee mee Mamak style, mee yoke or prawn mee, mee java, mee goreng, mee soup, fish ball mee....). Well, at least we Malaysian beat them at the variety of mee as compared with the very standard Italian spaghetti even if our curry puff cannot beat their Big Calzone. And I love the Lasagne.

Lasagne Italian food

Reminds me of our kueh tiew or chee cheong fun. Only difference, lasagne is alternating layer of white "pastry" or what to me is "chee cheong fun" and fillings which is then baked. Very delicious. I think better than our chee cheong fun.

Rome, capital city of Italy

If I remembered correctly, our first disembarkation point was Rome, capital city of Italy. Of course we like the normal tourists, went gaping at the Colloseum (a far cry from our own version, the "Malaysian Colloseum". Plus visited the Vatican City, the Christian Catacombs of Rome and a few other places, but what I like are not all those ancient monuments, but eating stuff like pizza, calzone and lasagne fresh from the oven in the roadside "stalls".

We did not join a packaged tour, and were on our own. That means we had to waste precious tourist time hunting for accommodation which for us on a limited budget had to be Italian pensions. With modern technology, you will be well advised to use online accommodation websites like Roma Hotel

Florence, capital city of Tuscany

Can't remember how we got around, but visited Florence we did, and probably via train as I vaguely remember using the Europass. For ladies, you will be highly tempted by famous Italian fashion houses like Gucci, Prada, Roberto Cavalli and Chanel in Florence. Can't remember what we visited, but definitely remember, and vividly too, taking photographs or ourselves against the background of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in the Italian town of Pisa which also happened to be in the same province of Tuscany.

For accommodation booking, try Firenze Hotel.

Milan, large city in Lombardy

The visit was 30 years ago, so don't blame me for mixing up Milan with Florence as both are famous for of design and fashion. Milan is located in the plains of Lombardy and is one of the largest cities in Italy. Can't remember much about Milan. But if I am to visit Milan again, I will not ignore my now favorite way of getting accommodation, that is, book online at websites like Milano Hotel.

Venice, capital of region Veneto

30 years cannot take away my memory of Venice, the city of canals and unfortunately, also the sinking city. Want to visit Venice? Don't wait too long. One fine day, it may be submerged. What are my memories of Venice? The canals, the condola, the bridges, Piazza San Marco or in English, St Mark's Square, taking photos of pigeons resting on outstretched arms, etc.

St. Mark's Square, Venice, ItalyPhoto of St. Mark's Square is propery of Kieran Lynam

These are good memories. What are the bad memories? Wasting expensive tourist time hunting for suitable accommodation on arrival. My suggestion: use the highly convenient Internet and book your accommodation online at websites like Venezia Hotel and spend more time with the friendly pigeons.

Karaoke Singing at SS3, Petaling Jaya Community Hall

What is Karaoke

Karaoke is derived from the Japanese word kara which means "empty" and ōkesutora which means "orchestra". Karaoke is a very popular form of entertainment which any amateur singers can enjoy by singing along with recorded music using a microphone and public address system. The recorded music is usually a well-known pop song with the voice of the original singer is removed or greatly reduced in volume plus the lyrics of the songs are displayed on a video screen to help the singer. This is normally accompanied by some visual display such as beautiful scenery, etc. It is also often abbreviated to KTV. It is often misspelled 'kareoke' (ka-ree-oh-kee) due to the English pronunciation.

Karaoke Singing Sessions in SS3, Petaling Jaya

The Cancer Society Selangor and Federal Territory organized Karaoke Singing Sessions at the SS3 Dewan Serbarguna (Community Hall) on the following days and time every day of the week:

Monday: 10.00am to 1.00pm Karaoke Practice Session
(I saw an old couple just dancing {ballroom dancing} along with the songs and music, but I think that was informal, they probably just tagged along)

Wednesday: 10.00am to 12.00 noon: Karaoke and Ballroom Dancing

This is followed by Line Dancing from 12.00 noon to 1.00pm

Friday: 10.00am to 11.30am: Karaoke Singing

This is followed by Line Dancing from 11.30am to 1.00pm

I will put a map here later or you can refer to Talk on Malaysia's Space Program. (click BACK button to get back to this page)

Malaysian restaurants in New Jersey and New York

New Jersey and New York

New Jersey and New York are both states of the United States of America, and to me, they are rather like our Selangor and Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur are two different "states" of Malaysia (inverted commas because I don't know what else to call the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur because the Federal Territory consists of three different region, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, all three scattered around the country and not a single continuous region. However, Kuala Lumpur city and Petaling Jaya city is practically a single metropolitan area together with other towns like Subang Jaya and other towns in the Klang Valley. Similarly, I believe Jersey City and New York City is practically a single metropolitan area with many New York corporations having their offices in Jersey City where rents and property prices are lower, and yet near enough to New York City.

Malaysia Airlines have direct non-stop flights to Newark International Airport (EWR), just only 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan, New York City, and Jersey City is just across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan in New York City.

New York City, New York

New York City is the largest city in the United States and one of the world's major centers of commerce and finance. The headquarters of the United Nations is located in New York City. New York City is divided into five boroughs (county) - The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. The Statue of Liberty, an icon of New York City with its upraised hand greeted millions of immigrants to America as they land at Ellis Island. Wall Street located in Lower Manhattan is well known globally as the global financial center with the influential New York Stock Exchange located in Wall Street. New York City has numerous skyscrapers including the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center Twin Towers destroyed in the September 11, 2001. Malaysia still have its Petronas Twin Towers, fortunately.

Jersey City, New Jersey

Jersey City is the second-largest city of New Jersey behind Newark and is the seat of Hudson County. Jersey City is located on the west bank of the Hudson River across from Lower Manhattan, New York City, and in fact is part of the New York metropolitan area. It is an important commercial and industrial area plus a port of entry of the United States of America. Jersey City have very good railway connections to the rest of the United States and I would say it is an important transportation hub. You can get one of the best view of New York City skyline at the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. The icon of New York City, and in my mind, the icon of the United States of America too, the Statue of Liberty can be easily reached from the Liberty State Park in Jersey City where parking is available, and from which you can board a Circle Line ferry to go to both the Statue of Liberty as well as Ellis Island, the historical landing points of many of the ancestor immigrants of the current citizens of the United States of Americans.

Malaysian restaurants in Jersey City and New York

Malaysians I think are very fond of its own cuisine, so many Malaysians seek Malaysian restaurants when in a foreign place. Well, if you happened to be in Jersey City (and New York, they are practically one and the same), have no worry, for there is no shortage of Malaysian restaurants there. Among them are:

Malaysians in Germany

Malaysians in Germany

Malaysians are no strangers to Germany. My secondary school mate ended up working in Germany in a Chinese restaurant. My son-in-law's father had his training on printing machines in Germany. I myself have been to Germany 3 times. Twice in the 70's when as a student in Belgium, Germany's eastern neighbor, I and a group of Malaysians took a bus tour to Cologne and to Phantasialand in Brühl. I went again with a few friends in a car to Frankfurt, also in the 70s, traveling from Belgium. The third time was in 1999 when I went to the Geneva International Invention exhibition. On the way back, I stopped over in Frankfurt to visit my niece now married to a German there.

According to the German Embassy in Malaysia, there are now about 800 young Malaysians studying at German universities, many of them receiving scholarships from the Malaysian Government, and the numbers are still increasing. In Malaysia itself, there is the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) in Kuala Lumpur has been providing high-tech training in the modern and advanced fields of production technology and industrial electronics since its was started in 1992.

Things I missed in Germany

I have enjoyed the sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) and bratwurst (German sausage). Sauerkraut is rather like the kim chee of Korea. There have been reports that kim chee is good for bird flue, which if true, may also be true for sauerkraut. There is of course the free flowing beer especially during Oktoberfest which is a festival lasting 17 to 18 days in the month of October. This however, may not appeal to Malaysians professing the Muslim religion, but there are lots to do, see and eat during the Oktoberfest.

While the capital city of Germany is Berlin, most visitors arriving by air will probably land in the Frankfurt Airport. an important hub for international flights from around the world. That was where I stopped over on the way back to Malaysia from Geneva, Switzerland. My architect brother-in-law is sure to love the German Architecture Museum (Deutsches Architektur Museum) at Schaumainkai 43, Frankfurt 60596.

I missed visiting Berlin and peeping at what remained of the Berlin Wall which divided East and West Berlin for 28 years, from August 13, 1961 until it was dismantled in 1989. Only a few short sections and watchtowers are now left. If I don't hurry, I wonder if I will get to see any of it as taking part of the wall as a souvenir. One can even sell them on eBay. I understand that there is still a 1316 metre long East Side Gallery left, located along Mühlenstrasse between Warschauer Strasse and the Hauptbahnhof and that had been decorated with 106 paintings. It seems other smaller sections of the Berlin Wall can be found at the Bernauer Strasse, Invaliedenfriedhof, the Reichstag, Nieder-kirchner Strasse, Bornholmer Strasse and Zimmerstrasse.

And of course the famous Black Forest in southwestern Germany which I did not get a chance to visit. Didn't get the chance to taste the Black Forest ham, the Black Forest gateau (Black Forest Cake), the Flammkuchen made with ham, cheese, and cream, or the Pfannkuchen, a crêpe or crêpe-like pastry.

Looking forward to the day when Air Asia X starts to fly to Germany and I can afford the airfare to visit Germany again. If that ever happened, I will not do like before, that is, hunt for accommodation only on arrival. That is a big hassle and a waste of precious tourist time. I would rather book online at websites like Germany Hotels.

To get to see (and hopefully bring back a brick of) the Berlin Wall, I will need to go through Berlin Hotels if I can handle the German website with my limited grasp of the German language, or flee to Berlin Hotels, the English version of that online hotel booking website.

Now Austria is just next door, and it would be a sheer waste not to hop over to Austria and its capital city, Vienna, after flying half way round the globe. This would interest my daughter greatly as she trained to sing with Malaysia's Opeaafest Children's Choir under Kam Sun-Yoke. She would love to see the world famous Vienna Boys' Choir in action.

I can't expect my family to sleep in the railway station, so it will have to be the Wien Hotels for accommodation.

How Malaysians celebrate New Year

Most Malaysians celebrate New Year 1st January the way others around the world celebrate New Year. Many go watch the usual fireworks at 12 midnight:

Other Malaysians celebrate New Year's Eve by going for concerts like those featuring Malaysian singers such as Mawi, M. Nasir, Awie and Wings, Malay cultures like ghazal music, or Chinese culture like a Chinese lion dance and even Indian cultures like Indian dances. Some may go for dinner and hotels and make lots of noise at 12 midnight. This is more dangerous, but some do get drunk. But let's hope they don't go driving around.

How Penangites celebrate New Year

Penangites are residents of Penang, the Pearl of the Orient. Here are how some Penangites celebrated the beginning of 2008. They celebrated 1st January 2008 in jail. Twenty-six youngsters aged between 15 and 21 on Penang Island were jailed for creating disturbances at Gurney Drive and the Esplanade. They sprayed vehicles with artificial snow and started fights. Not only that, when policemen arrived to help calm down the disturbances, the boisterous youths threw empty spray cans at the policemen. To make matters worst, they verbally abused the policemen. The over enthusiastic youths were charged with vandalism and fighting in public areas. A man and a woman were also arrested for selling cans of artificial snow in Gurney Drive.

How Ipoh residents celebrate New Year

Another 66 Mat Rempits (illegal motorcycle racers who frequently show off their riding skills with stunts) 18 to 28 years of age celebrated New Year with police summons and getting their motorcycles sized by the police for illegal racing on a public road (Jalan Brash beside the Sultan Abdul Aziz Recreational Park in Ipoh). One of them celebrated 1st January, 2008 in jail after being tested positive for drug.

How Sabahans celebrate New Year

Some Sabahans celebrate New Year in a less conventional way. They go throw themselves into the rivers or the sea to "buang sial" or to get rid of bad luck. Alongside them may be others celebrating New Year by having barbecue parties on the beach.

How New Year is celebrated in Laos

How strange! The Lao people celebrate New Year in almost the same way. Wonder if it is for the same objectives
