Tragedy: Demolishing Jaya Supermarket Petaling Jaya

The multi-storey mall and car park which every Petaling Jaya residents refer to as Jaya Supermarket was the first mall and supermarket in Petaling Jaya which many consider historical, especially when the first effort to demolish it with numerous excavators for rebuilding resulted in a tragedy. The structure collapsed prematurely and 2 workers were buried alive and died.

Kashmir Cafes University Garden PJ wifi

While looking for an eating place with wifi, chanced upon Kashmir Cafes in University Garden, SS3 Petaling Jaya (see location map and GPS coordinates). Ordered banana leaf rice set with 3 vegetables plus dry mutton varuval. The boss told me that the set comes with 3 vegetables and 1 meat, but on paying for the food, found out that the meat is only included with the banana leaf rice set from Monday to Thursday. Friday and weekend you would have to pay for the meat.

So how was the taste? Well, it is tasty enough but I told the the lady boss my son who is very fussy about food is my official food taster and I will be coming with him another day for his food review.

So to me, what is the best about Kashmir Cafes. Without doubt it is the wifi and the electric power outlet that are conveniently located on one of the wall alongside the long bench chair as you can see from the photo below:

My handbag was stolen last week and you can view the power point of the pictures taken off the security camera of Sunway Pyramid.

Xandria and I were at a private function at Thai Thai Restaurant seated at the VIP table in a private area of the restaurant and yet my rather big hand bag which was placed on the floor between my seat and Xandria's was stolen. We did not move away from our seats at any point of time.There were 8 other people at our table and another 2 tables of VIP guests and journalists in the same room and none of us noticed anyone coming near us except the waiters serving our table. It's really incredible how that happened.

They look like a middle eastern couple.

This is to remind everyone to be very careful as these are professionals and it can happen to anyone. Please send the power point to all your families and friends as this may help prevent further such incidences.

Restoran Wei Yip fish head noodles at Sunway Mas Commercial Center

Here is a restaurant where owners take the trouble to not only interact with customers, but also give away gifts. I chanced upon Restoran Wei Yip Famous Fish Head Noodles while exploring Dataran Prima, Aman Suria and Sunway Mas Commercial Center on Christmas Day and decided to have my brunch there. Part of the reason why I settled on Restoran Wei Yip fish head noodles was because of these "Santarinas":

Monday morning basketball court SS3 PJ

Pathmanathan, the usual resident of SS3 Petaling Jaya, is indisposed, and this Monday, 7am to pm, Alan Lai and assistants is leading the SS3 community in its healthy hour long exercise.

Line Dancing SS3 PJ Community

The Cancer Society holds weekly line dancing sessions at the Petaling Jaya SS3 Community every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. Below is a video of a group of beginners learning line dancing, pretty for beginners may I say so:

Shortcut from Kelana Jaya Federal Highway and Sunway

The junction at the "Penang Bridge" which is the normal exit route from Kelana Jaya to the Federal Highway is usually jammed. Further, if you are coming from Kelana Jaya along the LDP highway, you are not allowed to proceed to Sunway, but must exit to the Federal Highway towards Klang, get into Subang Jaya, then make a very large U turn back to Sunway.

Now there is a short cut from Kelana Jaya via Jalan SS8/2 along Sungei Way Free Trade Zone. Along LDP highway, at Western Digital, turn into the Road SS8/2 leading to the Sungei Way Free Trade Zone (map below, click on map to enlarge it):



You will reach a junction which will turn left into the Sungei Way Free Trade Zone. There will be a traffic light here. Instead of turning left into the Sungei Way Free Trade Zone, proceed straight (refer to photo below):



As you proceed further from that junction, you will come to a fork in the road (refer to photo below):

Note: There is a mistake in the labeling in the above photo. The left fork will not lead to the Federal Highway heading towards Kuala Lumpur, only to Sunway and Sunway Pyramid

If you want to go to Subang Jaya or Shah Alam or Klang, take the right fork which will exit to the Federal Highway heading towards Klang.

If you want to go to Sunway, take the left fork. This road will lead you past Nanyang Siang Pow, past FireFighter, Proton, then to the traffic light at the "Penang Bridge". Turn left at the traffic light and you will be proceeding to Sunway and Sunway Pyramid.

Petaling Jaya SS3, aerobic exercise led by K. Pathmanathan

Above is a photo of K. Pathmanathan, 68 year old and really fit. Mr. Pathmanathan was a former Sports Ministry personnel and now volunteers to lead aerobic exercise sessions in various places and one of them is at the covered basketball court, next to the community hall of Section SS3. The exercise sessions are livened by music using his own audio system comprising a P.A. (public address) system, microphone and portable player, costing RM7,000 which he bear himself.

Mr. Pathmanathan designed the series of aerobic exercises himself and according to theStar Sunday Metro, 15 July 2007, was reported to have said that people who had frozen shoulders, joint and lower back problems have found relief through his series of aerobic exercises.

Mr. K. Pathmanathan also conducts fitball exercises in Sri Setia, Sungai Way every Wednesday. I have seen a small group of people exercising early morning while still dark, with a large, bouncy ball which I guess must be that fitball exercises, at the same basketball court before the star of the aerobic exercises. According to Mr. K. Pathmanathan, these fitball exercises strengthen the muscles and improve the blood circulation in the lower back by 30%.

More about Mr. K. Pathmanathan

Mr. Pathmanathan has written more than 50 health care articles in a Malay newspaper, has also been featured in health lectures on radio, has been televised with 10 others doing aerobic exercises every Sunday morning on a national television channel. He has also swam from Butterworth to the Penang Island twice, both under 4 hours.

Mr. K. Pathmanathan also keep himself healthy with good nutrition, following a very strict diet of 55% complex carbohydrates such as rice, cereals and bread and the rest are mainly vegetables. He seldom eats meat as he is of the opinion that the body only absorbs some of the nutrients from meat and meat overworks the kidney.

Karaoke Singing at SS3, Petaling Jaya Community Hall

What is Karaoke

Karaoke is derived from the Japanese word kara which means "empty" and ōkesutora which means "orchestra". Karaoke is a very popular form of entertainment which any amateur singers can enjoy by singing along with recorded music using a microphone and public address system. The recorded music is usually a well-known pop song with the voice of the original singer is removed or greatly reduced in volume plus the lyrics of the songs are displayed on a video screen to help the singer. This is normally accompanied by some visual display such as beautiful scenery, etc. It is also often abbreviated to KTV. It is often misspelled 'kareoke' (ka-ree-oh-kee) due to the English pronunciation.

Traffic updates via Internet, SMS and MMS

The Star reported that it is now possible to get information on real-time traffic conditions on several highways via variable message signboard (VMS), short messaging system (SMS) and multimedia messaging system (MMS) based on the Intelligent Transport System ITS, and it will be free. However, it was not reported how to get the information via, for example SMS. I have sent a message to request for such information and will update this post as soon as I get the information.

So now in addition to the ITIS (Integrated Transport Information System), now we also have LLM (Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia) to get real-time traffic information in the Klang Valley.

Eating out: Dinner at Restoran Sing Kee

My daughter and son-in-law took us out for dinner yesterday night, at the Restoran Sing Kee. The restaurant is in Sungai Way New Village, diagonally opposite the Sungai Way wet market, and directly behind the Sungai Way Police Station. My children liked that restaurant because it serves fried kueh tiow with venison (deer meat). The venison is tender and delicious.

However, last night, they didn't order the kueh tiow with venison. They ordered stir fried chicken with dried chili (RM20), tau foo (RM10), assam fish (RM20), soup (RM15), rice and some other dishes (unfortunately I am not proficient at reading Chinese writings, though I can converse in it, so the description and the prices are not guaranteed correct.

The total cost of the dinner for the seven of us came up to RM 89.70 (USD 25.95). My daughter said it is reasonable.

Real time road traffic condition information for Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur

The public system still have some way to go before large number of people will leave their cars in their home and take public transport as currently the state of the current public transport still need much improvements. Most have little choice but to take their private vehicles to their workplaces etc. To make life easier to avoid traffic jams, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur has instituted ITIS (close new window to get back to this page), short for Integrated Transport Information System, via which you may find out traffic conditions of major roads through the Internet and telephone before you venture out of your house. With the information, you can thus choose less congested routes, choose to leave at a later time when traffic become less congested thus lessen wastage of petrol and emission of the greenhouse gas CO2 by unnecessary idling, etc.

You can view still traffic images of roads which are updated every 20 seconds (that is what I measured). The roads are KL-Seremban Highway, Federal Highway, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan TAR, Jalan Pahang, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Kuching, MRR2, Lebuhraya Mahameru, Jalan Duta and Bandar Tasik Selatan.

There is also a call center. You can call 03 8947 4002 for traffic information.

Sarawak Famous Kolo Mee in Petaling Jaya

My daughter, married to a Sarawakian, used to bring back packets of Sarawak Kolo Mee each time she visits Sarawak. It was nice. So when I heard that there was a stall in Petaling Jaya New Town serving Sarawak Kolo Mee (dry noodles), and I had some things to attend to in the nearby National Registration Department, I decided to go searching for the stall. I found it in a corner coffee shop opposite Menara MPPJ. The name of that coffee shop was Restauran Fook Yun. The signboard of the stall says Sarawak Handmade Noodles. It was a Monday, and the stall was closed. The next Wednesday, I had another meeting in PJ Hilton, and decided to try my luck again. This time it was opened, by two ladies who said they were from Sarawak.

I ordered a bowl. Didn't specify big (bowl) or small. They served me the small (bowl), probably I was skinny. It was RM4 (USD1.10). A big (bowl) would have been RM4.50 (USD1.23). It was a simple dish of noodles topped with some barbecued pork, a few stem of vegetable and a sprinkling of fried shallots and spring onions, and served with a bowl of soup with 2 beef balls. This friday, I will be having a meeting again in PJ Hilton. After the meeting, I will be going again, but this time for the big (bowl) and see what the difference will be.

UPDATE Friday 17 November 2007: After my meeting at PJ Hilton, I made my way to the kolo mee stall again, but this time equipped with a digital camera, which I am not very proficient at using. So, if the photos turned out to be a bit blur, I apologise. This time, I specified big (bowl), and the difference is slightly more mee (noodles) and more garnishing of minced meat, barbequed pork, 2 fried wan tan (prawn meat I think, wrapped in pastry), a few stem of vegetable, sprinkling of fried shallot and spring onions. UPDATE 30 Novembert 2006: Went to the dentist today. As the stall was nearby, I though I might as well try out the kolo mee again. This time I ordered small (bowl) and bought along a digital camera to capture an image of a small (bowl) for you to see the difference. Here us the photo (click to enlarge):

Don't look like there is very much difference between big and small, except for slightly less noodles.

The coffee shop is located at one of the 4 corners of Menara MBPJ (Menara means tower in Malay and MBPJ is short for Menara Majlis Bandaran Petaling Jaya), and facing it. It used to be called MP Menara MPPJ (Majlis Perbandaran Petaling Jaya). The town has recently been upgraded to become a city now, so the change in name. The tower is easily recognisable from a distance. The coffee shop is at 31 Road 51/1, 46200 Petaling Jaya.
