Presenting *Music from Movies & Musicals 3*
In line with The Philharmonic Society of Selangor’s objectives of bringing the joy of music to the community, and with the support and endorsement of the Mayor of Petaling Jaya and Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) and Tourism Selangor, Music from Movies & Musicals 3 is a 2-hour concert with over 80 singers and dancers, backed by a live band, performing songs from Disney movies (Little Mermaid, Aladdin) and children’s TV shows to music from musicals such as Beauty and the Beast, Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Starlight Express, Miss Saigon, West Side Story, Mamma Mia, Wicked, etc. e welcome back on stage Phil alumni Nicole Ann-Thomas, Victor Chua, Ho Soon Yoon with guest artiste Ida Mariana who will be performing alongside many new young talents.
Music from Movies & Musicals 3 is part of the Selangor Musical Extravaganza 2010 program, organized by Tourism Selangor.

Pinos Pizza & Pasta OUG Klang Road
Wah, would you believe it? An Italian chef by the name of AJ opened a pizza stall in a typical Chinaman coffee shop in OUG (Oversea Union Garden or Taman OUG). Now at last you can eat like you eat in Italy, at the roadside where you can watch your pizza being prepared and baked right in front of your eyes, then served piping hot direct from the oven to your table.

Here are the food we tried out, Aglio Olio and Pizza Siciliana. My official food taster gave 5 star (best) for the Aglio Olio while Pizza Siciliana scored between 3 star to 4 star. The Aglio Olio was so spicy (hot), it made my nose run. However, you can order them less spicy:

Open House Chinese New Year Selangor 2010
The Pakatan Rakyat Selangor State Government will be holding their Chinese New Year open house at the Dong Zen Buddhist Temple, Jenjarom on the seventh day of Chinese New Year, Saturday 20th day of February, 2010. Dong Zen Buddhist Temple, Jenjarom, is famous for its annual lantern and flora festival. It will be officiated by Selangor Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) Abdul Khalid Ibrahim. The following VIPs, Khalid, Selangor state exco Elizabeth Wong and top Buddhist leaders, will grace the occasion.

Celebrations should be carried out sincerely and not merely for the sake of "showing" themselves as being appreciative of the other cultures. This trend was noticed even in the Thaipusam celebration. A big cut out - something we usually see only in Tamil movies was placed to welcome Najib, this too was hazardous to safety. They tried to do the same in Klang. If they are truly sincere, they should have one event and have all member of the state and parliament for Selangor present. Put aside the political differences and reach out to people genuinely. As for now, all these so called state level celebration turns out to be just another PR exercise for the respective parties. What Police did in Batu Caves citing State setup stage as security hazard was also not proper. But then again , they just menurut perintah! This nation will prosper only when leaders are genuine in their intentions to serve the nation!

The rival political leaders meeting and feeding the people once a year during festive times is NOT important. Instead they must see that the needy and the poor are not always remaining poor and deprived of basic necessities in the country.There are thousands in this country who don't have 2 square meals a day. The leaders of whichever party must make sure the economy develops and the people of all races have their basic needs satisfied. People can no longer be woodwinked with once a year niceties given by politcal leaders to catch votes.

Home renovation tips - change address
This will be the first of the series of tips for home renovation based on my experience of renovating my house in Malaysia. As such, the tips will be most relevant to renovating homes in Malaysia, but many will be relevant in renovating for anywhere in the world.
This house renovation tip is not applicable to minor renovations where you continue to stay in the house, but for major renovations where you need to shift to a temporary adobe. This first tip relates to snail mail - letters, especially letters from banks and other financial institutions aw well as other important letters. Now when renovating, I do not believe you will constantly be at the site plus there will be many non family members. You would not want to risk the possibilities of them intercepting your sensitive mails and registered letters etc. will you?
A cheap solution would be to change the address of financial institutions and other sensitive sources of your mails to your temporary home or trusted relatives. However, this will involve you going to many places, but if you don't mind, I supposed it is OK.
May I suggest an easy and not expensive solution - get a post box (peti surat) from the Post Office and instruct the Post Office to sent all mail addressed to the site to the post box. Then you don't have the hassle of going to multiple places to change address.
I did that in a Selangor Post Office. The process is not instantaneous. You will have to apply, the application will be sent to the Selangor Central Post Office which is in Shah Alam. If approved, they will then send an invoice to the Post Office where you applied. I do not know if they will inform you when the invoice arrive, but you will then have to pay the RM50 for the annual fee plus a refundable RM30 as deposit for the key. You will then have to wait for the person in charge to change the lock (I am not 100% sure if they actually do) before you get your key.
I could not wait, so what I did was to go the the Shah Alam Post Office with my application and I got the invoice on the same day. Even after returning to the local post office and paying on the spot, I could not get the key because the person in charge of changing the lock was not around and I had to return the next day.

Eating out: Dinner at Restoran Sing Kee
My daughter and son-in-law took us out for dinner yesterday night, at the Restoran Sing Kee. The restaurant is in Sungai Way New Village, diagonally opposite the Sungai Way wet market, and directly behind the Sungai Way Police Station. My children liked that restaurant because it serves fried kueh tiow with venison (deer meat). The venison is tender and delicious.

However, last night, they didn't order the kueh tiow with venison. They ordered stir fried chicken with dried chili (RM20), tau foo (RM10), assam fish (RM20), soup (RM15), rice and some other dishes (unfortunately I am not proficient at reading Chinese writings, though I can converse in it, so the description and the prices are not guaranteed correct.
The total cost of the dinner for the seven of us came up to RM 89.70 (USD 25.95). My daughter said it is reasonable.

Batu Caves
Batu Caves first caught public attention in 1878 when an American naturalist, William Hornaday followed the odour of guano up a jungle trial and chanced upon huge limestone caves which he compared with Basilica of Saint Peter, Rome. It consist of 3 main caves followed by a number of smaller ones. The caves were then surrounded by thick jungle 13 km from the city center and only accessible by hardy hikers guided by local guides. However, because of Hornaday's enthusiasm, eager visitors had beaten a regular trial to the caves.
The caves soon became a favourite place for Hindu devotees to set up a shrine to honor the omnipotent Tamil Deity Lord Murugan. Early visitors had to scramble over piles of rocks, but as time goes by, wooden steps followed by stone steps made the caves more accessible. You now have to climb 272 steps to get to the caves. The biggest cave is the Temple Cave or Cathedral Cave which is visited by many devotees. The ceiling of this cave is about 100m above the ground, and several holes in the ceiling lights up the cave during daytime. In January 2006, a 42.7m high statue of Lord Murugan was constructed at the Batu Caves.
Near the foot of the steps is an Art Gallery Cave which display statues and paintings of Hindu gods as well as scenes from the Ramayana. The sculptures and pictures are painted in beautiful color and great details and even individual eyelashes and fingernail ridges can be seen. Entry fee is RM1.
The most busy period of Batu Caves is during the Thaipusam festival celebrated on the 10th month of the Hindu calender, which will fall on 1 Febuary this year. This festival celebrates 2 events, the birthday of Lord Murugan and the defeat of the demon Soorapadman by Lord Murugan. The gathering start in the evening before the festival in the Sri Mariamman Temple in centre of Kuala Lumpur. For this year, the procession will begin its journey from Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, Jalan Tun H.S Lee, on February 1 at 12.20am led by a silver chariot and is expected to reach Batu Caves early in the morning on the same day.
The chariot will be accompanied by devotees carrying kavadis, which represent mini shrines placed on the shoulders of devotees. Chains are hooked from the kavadis onto the flesh of the carrier. Some are pierced by spears, which are not to be more than 1m long. Others hook limes, oranges or coconuts onto their bodies as an act of seeking blessings from the gods. They will be accompanied by supporters with dances, songs and music.
Since this year is Visit Malaysia Year 2007, there will be a 10-minutes fireworks display at 12 midnight on January 31 and cultural performances, musicals, classical and modern dance performances on Febuary 1.
Getting There
You can take bus no. 11D from the front of Bangkok building near the Central Market (Pasar Seni), which will be a ride of about 1 hour. Homestay Programme
Like to know how the typical folks in the kampongs (villages) live? Join in Malaysia's Homestay Program. There are Homestay Programme in every states in Malaysia. Get to know the family you stay with, experience dining with local dishes. Experience Malaysian's well known hospitality and culture. Live as the local do, like wearing a sarong and play unique Malaysian kites with kids in the scenic paddy fields. Watch a local cultural dance or participate in silat, the local form of martial arts. Host families usually gets between RM60 (USD17.11) to RM120 (USD34.21) per day per head.
There are homestay programme near to Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. In Selangor and Negeri Sembilan there are homestay programmes in Kuala Langat, Banghuris, Air Manis, Sungai Tengi and Sungai Haji Dorani and Pelegong.

Chef Loong Restaurant - hotel fare at non-hotel prices
Chef Loong Restaurant, is a restaurant serving "dim sum" (Cantonese term meaning touch the heart translated literally. Consist of many dishes of "tidbit" of small portion), deserts and "tong sui" (translated literally is sugar water, which may be sesame seed porridge, groundnut porridge, etc.) in the heart of Petaling Jaya, now a city about 10km from Kuala Lumpur, the capital. The current chef is Low Kean Fatt, who first started working at the age of 15 cooking Cantonese cuisines and has served at various large hotels and restaurants like Shangri-La KL, Mandarin Oriental KL, Four Seasons Singapore.
The restaurant offers Cantonese (Hong Kong)-style, Szecuan-influenced dim sums and Shanghainese dim sum. Currently, there are 60 items of dim sums and deserts in the menu. It is claimed that colors in the food are natural colorings from vegetable. For example, beet root (purple in color) is used for the Steamed Beetroot Duck Dumpling. They also said that their menu are changed every 3 months, where popular dishes are retained while not so popular ones are replaced by new creations. Currently among the dishes offered are Shanghai Siew Loong Pau (dumpling), Deep Fried Golden Almond Prawn (prawns coated with almond flakes that makes it crunchy) and (I hope no one goes for this one) Assorted Meat Dumpling with Shark Fin Brooth, which at RM11.80 (USD3.24) which they claim to be good value as the servings are generous and the brooth are "real good stuff".
For desert, there is Chilled Aloe Vera jelly with Lemon Grass topped with lime sorbet with aromatic hints of lemon grass. This Low proudly claim to be his own creation at the hotel he worked at, and until now, is still enjoyed by many customers who dine there.
Because of chef Low experience in the hotels, the restaurant claims that dim sum in elegant hotel-style presentation can be had at non-hotel rates. They say that for something similar to items offered at hotels can be enjoyed at RM4 to RM6 (USD1.10 to USD1.64) per plate whereas the prices at the hotels will be two to three times more.

Sepang Formula One Racing Circuit
Formula One Racing Car
The circuit occupies a total area of 90 hectares with 30 units of pits, track length 5.542km with 5 left turns, 10 right turns and 8 straights with the longest straigth at 928 metre. The race distance is 54 laps, 310.4km or 192.9 miles. Its main grandstand capacity is 80,000 while the general admission is 80,000.
Other than the Formula One Malaysia Grand Prix, it also host the A1 Grand Prix, MotoGP, kart racing, motorcross facilities and other major motorsport events.
