Kashmir Cafes University Garden PJ wifi

While looking for an eating place with wifi, chanced upon Kashmir Cafes in University Garden, SS3 Petaling Jaya (see location map and GPS coordinates). Ordered banana leaf rice set with 3 vegetables plus dry mutton varuval. The boss told me that the set comes with 3 vegetables and 1 meat, but on paying for the food, found out that the meat is only included with the banana leaf rice set from Monday to Thursday. Friday and weekend you would have to pay for the meat.

So how was the taste? Well, it is tasty enough but I told the the lady boss my son who is very fussy about food is my official food taster and I will be coming with him another day for his food review.

So to me, what is the best about Kashmir Cafes. Without doubt it is the wifi and the electric power outlet that are conveniently located on one of the wall alongside the long bench chair as you can see from the photo below:

Pinos Pizza & Pasta OUG Klang Road

Wah, would you believe it? An Italian chef by the name of AJ opened a pizza stall in a typical Chinaman coffee shop in OUG (Oversea Union Garden or Taman OUG). Now at last you can eat like you eat in Italy, at the roadside where you can watch your pizza being prepared and baked right in front of your eyes, then served piping hot direct from the oven to your table.

If not all of your group of hungry people wants Italian pizza or pasta, no problem. You can mix and match. Next to it, the corner shop house is another restaurant serving all kinds of food. See the road signboard below. At the background, you can see a sign which says in Chinese and with pictures, porridge with frog legs? I have seen a table with pizzas plus some claypot, probably claypot chicken or something.

Here are the food we tried out, Aglio Olio and Pizza Siciliana. My official food taster gave 5 star (best) for the Aglio Olio while Pizza Siciliana scored between 3 star to 4 star. The Aglio Olio was so spicy (hot), it made my nose run. However, you can order them less spicy:

Environmentally friendly civic conscious Restoran Wei Yip

Yesterday night I had dinner at the Restoran Wei Yip again and got surprised. Yes, more than 1 pleasant surprises.

As mentioned, I got some gifts for eating at that restaurant on Christmas day. Yesterday, I received another one - an environmentally friendly reusable all cotton shopping bag from www.becomeasia.org, very handy for shopping and helping us to break that bad habit of using throwaway plastic bags.

It was a Saturday and I remembered that the very responsible Pakatan Rakyat Selangor state government had dedicated Saturday as the No Plastic Bag Day and it looks like Restoran Wei Yip has adopted the No Plastic Bag Day. Ah a civic conscious small restaurant is adopting CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).

Then I noticed an interesting light fixture:



I asked one of the owners, are those LED lights? I was told they are. Another environmentally friendly feature - low electricity consumption LED lights. How much? RM 60 plus (about USD$18). Wow, there are 18 of them in one fixture. That is 18x60 = RM 1080. Not only that, it seems the restaurant owner made the light fixture himself.

And the final surprise, we were served a small cup of Chinese tea each, no charge. And the cost of a plate of what seems to me to be fried chicken with lettuce for 2 and 2 bowls of rice plus 1 glass iced Chinese tea - RM10.90.

Le Yuan Vegetarian Restaurant

There is a vegetarian restaurant (actually a hawker stall) called Le Yuan Vegetarian Restaurant near the Taman Bahagia LRT station not far from Taman Megah:



I tried their Spare Ribs rice. It was RM3.80 (slightly over 1 USD):

Enter into Taman Megah. You will have to go right up to the T-junction (terrace houses visible from photo above) and at the left will be the Taman Megah sport center:



Turn right at the T-junction. At the second junction, at the traffic light, you will see a row of single storey shop houses:



Turn left at the traffic light and go to right to the end of the road till you meet a T-Junction. At the time of publishing, there will be a traffic light and in front, you will see some billboards:



Turn right at this T-junction which is also a traffic light. This main road will be heading towards Damansara Jaya Uptown and also the road from Damansara Utama Uptown to the toll plaza to the Plus East-West Expressway. There will be a secondary road running parallel to this main road. As soon as you see a turning into the secondary road, along which will be terrace houses, turn left into it, then turn right (that is, you will still be heading in the same direction, but on the secondary road parallel to the main road). Go right to the end and you will see a road signboard "Jalan Jenjarom":



At this point, there is only one way which is to turn left. Shortly, you will see a thatch roof restaurant, "Restoran Damansara Village", on the right:



Go straight right till the end until you reach a T-junction. Just before you reach the T-junction, you will cross a small bridge over a large drain:



When you reach the T-junction, Jalan Cempaka, if you see the road sign below:



you can then be sure you are on the right track. Turn right at this T-junction and a short distance away, you will see the Pantai Seafood Restaurant signboard:



Another few meters and you would have arrived at your destination - the Pantai Seafood Restaurant:

Malaysian Colosseum: Malaysia's oldest cinema cum restaurant

Most people will know that Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the center of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire and used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as public executions. I understand some unfortunate few had to face the lions minus weapons in the Colosseum in the bad old days. However, now it is but a badly damaged remnant of its "glorious" past.

Fortunately, our "Malaysian Colosseum" is still proudly standing and being maintained in good conditions. It is Malaysia's oldest cinema cum restaurant or Cafe cum hotel, built in 1921 by Chua Cheng Bok and still owned by his scions. The Colosseum cinema features mostly Indian movies and is still operating. There was a proposal by the Malaysian government proposed to close the theater and turn it into a cultural center, this caused a huge public outcry and the scheme was abandoned. Good thing.

Our "Malaysian Colosseum" (actually spelt Coliseum) is located at 98-100 Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur. A meal at the Colosseum restaurant will set you back between RM9 to RM34 (USD 2.35 to 8.95). This is the place to get real Western food like enormous sizzling steaks. The food is pretty good and the prices are reasonable. So despite its worn, ancient appearance, it is pretty popular and it is advisable to make reservation for a meal there without hassle.
